Cayetano Valois (2nd part)

I woke up in another monotonous morning, same as all the other days. I had very little amount of food for breakfast, as the provisions were becoming scarce. Then I read a book I stole from a sailor for introducing myself in the sea voyage, but it only makes me feel more afraid. The book talks about the beasts of the ocean, and how strong they are. After reading, I  stayed in my room, reading and finding more about being a doctor,  which was my commitment in the ship and also my cover. Then, I had a little lunch and walked around the ship. As I told, every day was equal to the day before, as it was my sickness. Since we started this trip, it hadn’t  stopped. As a doctor, I should tell it is normal, just because it was my first time, but there was something else. I wanted to get off to arrive to my destiny as soon as possible, because I was afraid of being discovered. The consequences could be terrible.

Somehow, a week later we went ashore. I was so happy I was finally going to escape from my problems… But then I found about the truth. As we got nearer the land, it started looking more like an island. I asked  the captain where were we approaching and if we were going to stay there for a long time. Those islands were the canary islands, and yes, we had to stay because our rudder was broken. Now all my plans were ruined. All my hope was gone. What have I done? I didn’t disserve this! I needed to make up my mind, and this month was the perfect chance to do it.

The next week I worked very hard. I continued my doctor studies just in case I didn’t change my job in the ship. I also learned some Italian, but not enough for talking with the Italian sailors. I read the Bible many times, maybe god pities from me even if  I had lied to a lord like the captain. I made a list with the things I had to do to survive. These are some: Don’t speak with Italians, don’t let the other doctor enter to the ship where I am, make friends in the ship. With my list, I figured I needed to change my job. One day, while I was entering provisions to the bridge, I saw all the sailors doing really strange things, they were in their pray time. They did all the priest told them just for “gods sake”. That’s it! If I change into a priest, then no one could do anything to me because I would use “god’s faith” on my own purpose. But I needed to know at least the basic things from our religion to make it more realistic, so during our stay in the Canary Islands I stayed with the priest.

Every day, after I entered provisions to the ship I went with the priests, and the one belonging to my ship, Alberto Mendoza, became a good friend of mine. There were priests in all the ships, and if I wanted to become one I needed to quit at least one of them, the perfect way was humiliation. The month quickly passed and I was now prepared to be a priest.

It was my last day on those islands, in fact it was in the afternoon when I realised I hadn’t changed my cover, and I hadn’t humiliate any of the priests yet. The first two ships had already left. If I really wanted to be the priest of my previous ship I needed to humiliate my best friend, and I needed to do it quick.

José Luis Alfama, the novice sailor (3rd part)

My real name is José Luis Paricio, but in the expedition I say my name is José Luis de Alfama.

16th March
The battle finally took place the 14th of March. It was, without any doubt, the worst experience of my life. I didn't know how to fight and I was really afraid. S
o, in the middle of the battle, with some small injuries, I ran and hid between some trees, until we finally defeated the Maya-Chontales.

24th of March
Today, we have founded the city of Santa María the Victoria in the place of the battle. It is the first city of the 'New Spain' in America.

26th March
The problems have appeared. Between the natives that work the lands, an epidemic of smallpox has appeared, killing lot of them while, between the spanish people, the disease doesn't elimate anyone. That's not the only problem. Some soldiers have developed the malaria. Our priests are praying for trying to make dissapear all our problems.

17th April
The problems haven`t dissapeared but our captain has decided to continue our voyage through the dense jungle. Sixty soldiers have stayed in the city for trying to pacify the region.

19th April
We have taked course to the city of Cucúa. Our captain wants to discover the great secrets and riches of this great empire. I think we should plan better our next offensive, but the captain is who commands.

The doctor of Colon, Alfonso de Toledo. (3rd part)

November 11th 1492.

Now when we are getting back to Spain, I want to describe the main affections that we have suffered in the voyage. Some sailors have suffered diarrhoea, possibly caused by the food. Some of them nearly died because of the lose of water, but finally I could cure all of them. Other men had scurby too. It is a very frequent illness among the sailors, when they don't consume fresh food, such as fruit and vegetables.

November 12th 1492.
During the voyage the captain Colon suffered blepharitis, maybe caused by the effort to watch land from the caravel for many days. Now that we are going back home, some men present fever and breathing troubles. This is an illness that I saw very few times, called influenza.

November 13th 1492.
The relations with the Indian people have allowed me to know some diseases usual among them, that we had never seen before. I have written the symptoms I observed and I am going to prepare an exposition to talk about them with other doctors and try to look for possible solutions for them. For me it has been a very interesting experience.

Alfeniz Madarroaga's Dairy (2nd part)

The last month has been really hard for all of us. We have had problem with the lack of food. Finally, Cortés had decided to go ashore.

When we took land, some days ago, we camp near a city called Potochán.  I don't know why but we are preparing for a battle. Pedro de Alvarado, my close friend, explained me that the idea of Cortés is to rescue some spanish soldiers. I can't understand correctly whats it's happening here. I think there is something more behind this decission. This natives are really friendly.

Anyway, the last week I have talked to many soldiers and sailors about the disease, but I didn´t find anything useful, only the things I just know. However, I notice that the natives of this land are getting sick with the smallpox and dying faster than the spanish people. I will investigate this events, but now I must prepare myself for healing war bounded. I hope I don't die in this crazy adventure.

Juan Domingo's dairy (3rd part)

The "volta do mar" hasn't finished and we haven't arrived at the south of Africa. "The volta do mar" has taken more time that we thought and we have eaten all the foodstuff we had in the hold. However, that's only one of the problems.

This night, I am going into a meeting because the sailors aren´t happy with the capitan and the lack of food. I think that they are planning to take the control of the caravel and I don´t know what to do. I´m a honorable man and I gave my word to the captain, but... I don won´t to die and I am thinking about sending an anonimous message to the Admiral or the Captain. I'm sure there is going to be a rebelion soon and I don´t want to be in the lossers place because that means death.

In addition to this,  I like the capitan position an behaviour. He is doing really well, he is always worried about the crew's spirit.  If I alert him he will be able to control the situation and avoid the rebelion and the death of the sailors by the gibbet.

Problems aboard (Captain of La Pinta's dairy)

One more day all seems wrong. My crew and I are worried about the end of this expedition, nobody knows what is going to happen and we are having some problems with this journey. It is lasting to much and for several weeks we haven't seen any land.

I'm starting to think we are lost in the middle of the sea. But that's not all, in the storage the food is dissapearing, we haven got  food for  only two more weeks. Everyone is hungry and nervous, we must take a decission. Colombus has given us some explanations about this expedition but my crew and I don't believe them. We have thought a lot about what can we do in this situation.

After days searching for ideas, we are agree in comming back home. It's hard but is the only solution. I have to give the ultimatum to Colombus, I'm afraid of the things that could happen after this, however if we don't come back now we will die. If we don't see land in 3 days we will return home.

Juan Antonio de Parreila's Diary (Part I)

26th of July
It’s the 8th time that I am going to be in this caravel and the first that I’m going to go through the Atlantic Ocean because I’ve always travelled around the Mediterranean Sea.

27th of July
I’m one of the most veteran sailor of the crew and the captain Lope de la Puebla trust  me because it’s not the first time I travel with him so he said to me that I have to choose the novice sailors so I’m doing them an exam. They are going to climb to the nest through the net. The first has climbed three parts before falling on the deck and the doctor has come to save him, because he has broken his right hand and his leg so he won't be able to come to the expedition. The second  has climbed in one minute and a half. At the middle of the climb he almost falls but we have put a security system around the mast for people don`t hurt. Finally I have choose 45 people that hasn`t fall from the net; one of them, Lauren de la Sierra has been the fastest one and seems a good recruit for our crew.

3th of August
We have leave the port with the 45 novice sailors. Many people have come to see us leaving the port because we are the first people that are going to get in Asia through the west.

Juan Domingo's Dairy (part II)

12th of July of 1497

As we need more crew before our departure, I prepared a contest for the novice sailors and the winner of the last post was Jaime Garcés, one of the younger boys. I think this is his first journey. We will see if he is dare enough for this kind of expedition.

27th of July of 1497

We have arrived into Cabo Verde Islands. The voyage until here was very easy, in fact, there wasn't any problem, as we followed the route marked on our portulan charts. As we are going to stay in Cabo Verde Island during a week, while the Captains, the officers and Vasco de Gama decide our next step, I'm going to visit the port inn and the slaves market. It's something that still shocks me.

3rd of August of 1497.

Now, there isn´t good atmosphere here in the ship. The sailors are nervous  due to the "volta do mar" but I don´t see where the problem is I've been with this Capitan before and he did the "volta do mar" perfectly well.

The trick is to control the west winds, which are really simple but I also was nervous the first voyage I did the "volta do mar", because I thought that the winds didn't blow the same direction, but they do. I remember I was so afraid that I started praying and thinking about my life. However, I believe in the Captain skills I'm sure this is going to be simple and fast.

Captain Lope de la Puebla (Dairy, part II)

9th of August.

Last week we had some problems with the rudder. Hopefully, we have arrived to Canary Island to review the boat.  It will take 3 weeks to repair it. In La Pinta more than the half of the crew is very superstitious and they think this is a signal of God's will. The atmosphere aboard is becoming odd. However, some sailors and I belive in Colombus' plans so we are postive in every moment. Colombus is sure  we are going to find new route travelling to the West.

16th of August

This afternoon some sailors came to my room  to tell me something important for them. They explained me that they had received a signal of God about our stop at Canary Island  and they were sure  that there will be a curse for those ones who try to cross the ocean. That curse says that if we try to cross the ocean the crew will get sick in few days and strange things will happen to our caravel. I didn't know if believe it or not. I contacted with Colombus and told him about the curse and the spirit of the crew, but he didn't believe it and didn't care about this. We will continue our expedition.

Hernando Castello's dairy (II part)

Yesterday morning, we arrived at the Cabo Verde Island. At night, I had a meeting with Vasco de Gama and the other officers in order to plan the next step of the expedition.

Volta do mar
Next week we will weigh anchor, but there is a problem, we don't know how long  the trip is going to be and we will test a new sea route. Our Admiral, Vasco de Gama, called it "volta do mar" and it's based on the winds of this unexplored are of the ocean. Some officers are not agree with this idea. In spite of wanting to use an alternative route, they must obey the Admiral decisions.

Another problem is the crew; if they knew our plans, they wouldn't want to do it, or maybe they would rebel. Although, I think this isn't a big problem because I know how to control them. Obviously, it is better that this doesn't happen, so I have to keep their spirit high and their minds worried with the works on the caravel.

First of all,  I am going to control the purchase of theprovisions (and, of course, some barrels of rum) to survive during this new manouver and then I will give them some prize to make them to be calm and do not rebel. The first sailor that discovers land will recieve a reward.

Escaping from justice

Hi,
I am Cayetano Valois de Erustes and I was a farmer at my village. I am a far descendant of the french royal family, as my grandfather was an ilegal son of Charles VII of France and a girl from Paris, but his mother died soon and he had to travel through villages working in many places, until he arrived to a village near Toledo, and he established there.

I was a farmer there until last July. I was cleaning my donkey when I smelled something that was burning. I followed the smell until I arrived to a near farm, and, while I was looking for flames or smoke, the owner of the farm, that was inside his house, went out and started to shout. In that moment, I understood that if he accused me, the authorities would torture, punish or even kill me. Without thinking, I ran to my donkey and went directly into a near forest. I spent the night there, and, the following morning, I started my way to Seville.

After two weeks trying to go through minor paths, I finally arrived to Seville. There, I spent the night in the workshop of a blacksmither that was from my village but had emigrated to Seville, and my friend told me the news: there was a reward of 2 "castellanos" of gold for the man who found me! Myfriend also told me that a man came to Seville the last week looking for sailors. It was the perfect opportunity!

The next day, I started my journey to Huelva, but with a new name an identity. From now on, I am Giuseppe Castiglione, a noble in Italy that is searching for adventures. My clothes were not good, so, in the way to Huelva, I stealed clothes to a merchant, putting my old clothes in his cart, so that he wouldn't notice it until he unload the goods.

When I arrived to Huelva, I did a short stop to sleep and I continued to Palos de la Frontera. It was the 1st of August of 1492. There, it wasn't difficult to find the captain: Colombus. I told to him that I was an italian noble and that I could help him speaking with the Indians of Calicut, due to the knowledge I had for a previous travel of my grandfather using the Silk Route. He accepted, and even invited me to a dinner with him. The 3rd of August of 1492, we started the long journey to India.

3-VISITA A MONREAL

Volvimos a Teruel.
Judith Escriche

Canary Islands, some stories

We needed to repair the Pinta. I took us one whole month to finish it. During that period, the oldest sailor of the ship  and some people of the Canary Islands told me the truth: our Captain, Chistopher Colombus was mad, he wanted to lead us to the end of the world. He wanted to go to the West, because he thought that the world was round. What a stupid thing! We all know that the earth is flat and if one approaches to the West he will  fall to the… I don´t know where, but one certanly falls somewhere. On Sundays, the priest of my village explains me this with the Holy Bible.
Snakes and other sea monsters
I'm really scared about this, I prefer to ne a priest rather than die, but now it is too late to come back. Moreover, there is a very old woman, that lives in a dirty little house in front of the port and every afternoon she goes out of her house with a chair and told me stories.
'Don´t listen to them, child ' she told me, grabbing my arm 'They are just trying to scare you. All what your mad Captain wants is to find an island on the ocean, before he reaches the end'

After this, I wasn´t as scared as the beginning, I´m just nervous.
During the moth we stayed on Canary Islands, I heard many histories at night. Alberto, a novice sailor of my age, and I went to the inns, where the old sailors often met to speak. There was a man, called Juan de Granada, everyone called him the Manco, because he left one hand in the sea. He explained us his story.

He had fallen into the sea and a very big shark, that it is a big fish with sharpen teeth that eats persons, attacked him and tore his left hand. There was also a man that said that when he was young, the ship were he travelled sank, because a very big squid, the Kraken, attacked it, and he saved his life because he knew how to swim. I also heard somebody spoken about a giant whale which attacked ships and about islands on the sea where the inhabitants were cannibals, that means that they eat people. But the best histories are the ones told  by Ursula, this old woman that lives in the port. When the sun goes down, Alberto and I run to her house, where she is waiting for us, she always gives us a cup a vine and starts to spoke. A little bit later more people start to arrive, but she never gives them vine.
She told us that his husband, Pedro Martinez, was a sailor of an expedition, but this expedition hadn't returned yet, this is why she sat in front the port all days. She was waiting for him, but I heard that his husband went around six years ago and he was probably dead. She also said that in one of his husband  travels, he went to a very far country, where there were very big animals called elephants, and some people that ride them. Moreover, there were  very big orange cats with black stripes. To prove it Ursula took a skin of this animal from her house and show it to us. There were also many smelly plants, called spices, that are used for the food. She also showed us a violet piece of cloth, that as she told us is very expensive because it was cold silk.
With all this stories, time flied away. The day we needed to go, I saw a very old ship arriving to the port. The people of this ship were thin, dirty and very tired. At that moment, Ursula, that was (as  all the days) looking at the sea waiting,, stood up, shouting

' Pedro! Pedro' –she shouted while she ran to one of the men. It was her husband.
I looked how the port of Canarias become smaller while the ship moves in to the sea. I don´t know where I go, but I don´t care.

EXCURSIÓN A MONREAL

Finalmente volvimos a Teruel.

VIAJE A MONREAL

EXCURSIÓN A MONREAL

VIAJE A MONREAL

VIAJE A MONREAL

HERNAN CORTES' EXPEDITION - Novice sailor

18th February
Three months have passed from the departure. The last month has been horrible because of the lack of foodstuff. We have eaten things such as sawdust or rats. Some members of the crew have serious stomach ache.

24th February
We are sailing near the coastline to try to fish something, but we don't fish much. The best fish are for the captain and the most important members of the ship. We, the sailors, are a little bit angry. We are hungry and we want to go ashore to eat better.

2nd March
Finally, our captain Hernán Cortés has decided to go ashore and camp near the city of Potochán. This night has been excellent. We have hunted some strange animals, similar to the boars, and we have eaten them.

3rd March
All the expedition has slept really well. All the soldiers have gone to explore the zone. The rest of the expedition hasstayed in the boat waiting for them.

11th March
The soldiers have returned with bad news. They have told us that there is a huge empire and, apparently, they are not pacific people. They have seen human sacrifices and very strange and tall buildings.

13th March
The captain has called up all the expedition. He has decided to attack the city. I have seen the veteran soldiers preparing their weapons and talking about battles. I have never taken part in one and I am really afraid of what is going to happen in the following days.
